On September 21, 2026, the Teran James Young Foundation (TJYF), a peace and sustainability nonprofit based on Maui, connected 20 Peace Pole sites in Hawaiʻi, Oregon, and Canada during a livestream marking the United Nations’ International Day of Peace. Communities thousands of miles apart took part together around a single message: May Peace Prevail on Earth.

“We held this event to raise awareness of how much the world needs peace, and we want it to grow every year. Everyone is welcome to join our weekly online peace practice. My hope is to see inner and outer peace in the world before I die,” said Genesis Young, Director of the Teran James Young Foundation.

The International Day of Peace is observed every year on September 21. It was established by the United Nations and invites people everywhere to commit to peace and nonviolence for the day. A Peace Pole is a monument, usually a pole or post, that displays the message May Peace Prevail on Earth. Peace Poles stand in schools, parks, gardens, places of worship, and public spaces around the world. The Peace Pole Project reports more than 200,000 Peace Poles planted worldwide.

The livestream opened with a minute of silence for peace at noon, in keeping with the United Nations’ observance, followed by a heart-centered global coherence meditation. Participating sites then took turns sharing at their Peace Poles, and viewers were invited to share their own ideas for peace solutions.

Peace Pole Sites that took part included 10 sites on Maui, 2 sites on Oahu, 2 sites on Hawaii Island, 3 sites in Oregon, and visited attendees in California, New Hampshire, Florida, Washington, Montreal, Southern Ontario, Costa Rica, Turkey, Delhi India, Aruba, and Singapore.

The Teran James Young Foundation received a Ceremonial Resolution 25-185 from Maui County Council Member Yuki Lei Sugimura, honoring September 21 as International Peace Day on Maui. The foundation is deeply grateful for the recognition and for the opportunity to keep building a culture of peace.

TJYF looks forward to welcoming even more communities, schools, congregations, and organizations to International Day of Peace next year.
