Windermere, FLORIDA, Sept. 17, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Thumbnail Bench measured the recent thumbnails of 1,043 YouTube channels with 100,000+ subscribers. Seven in ten show a face, most of them calm or happy. A quarter carry no words. The biggest channels use half the arrows and screenshots of the channels below them.

Thumbnail Bench, an AI thumbnail maker for YouTube creators, today published the largest public study of what top YouTube channels actually put on their thumbnails. The study tagged 11,223 long-form thumbnails from 1,043 channels across 11 niches on 21 design features, from faces and expressions to word counts, arrows and colour. Among the 7,970 thumbnails that show a face, only 11 percent show a shocked or surprised face. The most common expression is neutral, at 35 percent, followed by happy, at 32 percent.
The headline finding contradicts the most repeated piece of YouTube thumbnail advice. Only Gaming, where 25 percent of faces are shocked, comes close to making the shocked face a convention. In Fitness it is 3 percent.
Key findings from the YouTube thumbnail study
"Every guide says big shocked face, three words, red arrow. The channels that already win mostly don't do that," said Tim Schroeder, founder of Thumbnail Bench. "The face is there, but it's calm. The words are fewer as the channel grows. And when you line up a channel's best thumbnail against its others, no trick separates them. The idea does. The render is no longer the hard part. Knowing whether the thumbnail worked is. That's why we built the bench to publish the thumbnail to the video and read back the real impressions and click-through from the channel's own reports."
Full report and data. The full report, with charts, a niche-by-niche table, the method and a downloadable data file, is published as the YouTube thumbnail study 2026 on thumbnailbench.com. The aggregate tables are free to reuse with a link to the study.
Key numbers at a glance
About the method. Channels were found through public channel search across plain queries in each niche, filtered to 100,000+ subscribers and an upload in the previous 90 days, screened to exclude TV networks, labels, children's content and clip compilations, and capped at 100 per niche. Each channel's 15 most recent uploads were read from its public feed on 15 September 2026, with Shorts removed. Thumbnails were tagged with a fixed schema by a vision model; the tagger's agreement with a second run was 98 percent on a pilot. No click-through rates were used, because they are private to each channel, and no individual channel is named.
