New York, New York, Sept. 09, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dating Scout (https://www.datingscout.com/), an online dating-review platform, has published new research into the most common awkward moments people have during sex in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia. The survey of 6,000 adults found that "bedroom fails" are near-universal and that Americans are far more willing to admit them than Britons.
Among the 2,000 US adults surveyed, more than one in three (35.6%) admitted to breaking wind during sex, making it the most common "bedroom fail" in the country.
Across the Atlantic, the picture was very different. Just 6.6% of British respondents owned up to the same thing, meaning Americans admit to it more than five times as often. Australians came in between at 28.9%. Whether the gap reflects behaviour or simply candour is unclear, but the pattern held throughout the study: US respondents were consistently the most willing to admit an awkward moment.
One mishap unites all three countries. A muscle cramp mid-act was the number-one complaint in both the UK (29.7%) and Australia (32.4%), and ranked second in the US (26.6%) — the closest thing the data found to a universal experience.
Other common fails among US respondents included a pet jumping onto the bed (21.6%), a line of dirty talk falling flat (20.1%), finishing sooner than intended (20.0%) and falling off the bed or sofa (18.4%). Further down came calling out the wrong name (13.6%), a minor injury during energetic sex (12.2%) and putting a condom on incorrectly (11.0%).
The research also captured a modern twist: one in twelve Americans (8%) said they had accidentally triggered a voice assistant such as Alexa or Siri mid-encounter.
"The choreographed, candlelit version people see on screen sets an impossible standard," said Chris Pleines, founder of Dating Scout. "Our data shows that awkward moments in bed are the rule, not the exception. The couples who cope best are the ones who laugh it off rather than treat it as a disaster. A fit of giggles mid-sex is a sign of comfort, not failure."
